Pool Tables

Author: Ross Bainbridge

Pool tables, sometimes called pocket billiards tables, are rectangular in shape with a length twice that of its width. Generally pool tables are seven, eight or nine feet long; the most common tables are 9 feet long. They normally have six pockets, four at the corners and two on the sides.

Pool tables are now increasingly used in private homes. Before buying pool tables, it is important to consider the dimensions of one's game room. The room must be spacious enough to accommodate the pool table and the accessories that surround it. The player must find it convenient to make shots from all sides of the table.

Pool tables made of hardwood are regarded as the best -- Oak, Maple, Cherry, Ash, Poplar, and Mahogany are some of the common wood types used. Mica laminate or vinyl melamine coating and veneer laminates are also used in the construction.

The playing surface of pool tables is made of slate, which comes as single piece or as three pieces. Slate is directly fixed into the frame of the table with screws. The top rails that border the pool table are made either of particleboard or solid wood. Cushions are the most critical feature of the rail system. For a tournament play, the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) must approve the cushion type used.

Pool table covers can be made of woven wool or a wool/nylon blend cloth called baize. Excellent pool table covers are available in a variety of colors, styles and materials that complement every dcor. It's just a matter of choosing the right one for your home and needs.

Pool tables can be custom made to one's own taste - instruction manuals and related books can help the woodworker who has sufficient skills and the tools needed. A wide selection of pool tables, of various prices and quality, can also be ordered online. Some dealers ensure free delivery along with free accessory kits, so check the competition before deciding which dealer to go with.
